Kalat press club president gunned down

QUETTA: A local journalist and president of the Kalat Press Club Mehmood Ahmed Afridi was gunned down near the main bus stop of Kalat city on Friday.

The journalist was sitting at his public call shop near the bus stop in Kalat when unidentified armed men riding on motorbikes came and shot him dead. The Kalat Police Station head constable Lal Muhammed told The Express Tribune that Afridi was killed instantly.

Afridi’s body was shifted to the district headquarter hospital for autopsy.

The slain journalist worked for a local Urdu Daily Inthiqab and was the president of the Mir Ahmed Yar Khan Kalat Press Club.

As many as five journalists have been killed in Pakistan in 2013. Four of those have been killed in or belong to Balochistan.

Earlier this week, Malik Mumtaz, who was associated with Geo News and Khyber TV, was brutally gunned down by unidentified people, on February 27, while he was on his way home to Miranshah from Chashma.

Last year, many targeted attacks took place on journalists in Balochistan.

The general secretary of Khuzdar Press Club Abdul Haq was gunned down on September 29, near Khuzdar Post Office in main Khuzdar city.

On October 25, unidentified armed men opened indiscriminate fire on the sons of Nadeem Gurgnari, killing Siraj Nadeem on the spot while the younger one Manzoor later on succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
