Balochistan bill bars seminaries from preaching militancy

By Amanullah Kasi

QUETTA: The Balochistan Assembly adopted a bill on Friday barring madressahs from preaching militancy and terrorism and stopping them from publishing literature promoting sectarianism and hatred.

The bill also makes it mandatory for all seminaries to get themselves registered with relevant authorities.

Provincial Information Minister Younus Malizai tabled the Balochistan Societies Registration (Amendment) Bill 2010 which was adopted unanimously. The bill which amends the Societies' Registration Act 1860 shall be deemed to have taken effect from Oct 29, 2009.

The bill requires every seminary to submit a report about its educational activities to the Register of Societies at the end of each fiscal year.

It also requires every seminary to get its accounts audited by an authorised auditor. While the bill prohibits madressahs from teaching or publishing any literature which promotes militancy or spreads sectarianism or religious hatred, it does not bar the comparative study of religions or schools of thoughts or study of any other subject covered by the holy Qurean, Sunnah or Islamic jurisprudence.
