The city of Quetta observed a day of mourning on Sunday against the killing of more than 24 people in Saturday's coordinated attacks on a university bus and the Bolan Medical College Hospital. When a political party within the ruling coalition, such as the Pashtunkhawa Milli Awami Party, calls for a strike, it implicitly shows the government's helplessness to grapple with hard challenges.
To counter what China is doing in Pakistan, the United States should play hardball by supporting the movement for an independent Baluchistan along the Arabian Sea and working with Baluch insurgents to oust the Chinese from their budding naval base at Gwadar. Beijing wants its inroads into Gilgit and Baltistan to be the first step on its way to an Arabian Sea outlet at Gwadar.

Pakistan's mounting energy crisis and the growing demand for energy security in the region have magnified Balochistan's economic and strategic importance. As a result, in each and every significant agreement signed between Beijing, Islamabad and Tehran, Balochistan is the centre of attention.
